Changing culture one frame at a time

Creating Content Exploring Our Times

I am Simon Frederick, a self-taught artist, photographer, and filmmaker, inspired by Nina Simone’s belief that an artist’s duty is to reflect the realities of their times, it’s why I define myself as an artist.

My art is my voice—a tool I wield to reflect and shape the times.

Who am I? One of the UK’s 100 most influential Black Britons, celebrated for deeply exploring Black identity in visual arts. My series “Black is the New Black” not only challenged conventional narratives but also made history with its photographic portraits becoming the largest acquisition of African and Caribbean works included in the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. My journey into photography and film was driven by a desire to challenge the often monolithic narratives presented in mainstream media, striving to offer a more nuanced view of the human experience.

What do I stand for? Integrity, truth, and the power of representation. My projects, including “Black is the New Black,” “They’ve Gotta Have Us,” and “THE OUTSIDERS,” are not just pieces of art; they are cultural dialogues that invite viewers to question, understand, and empathise with the stories and identities presented.

Why should you care? Because art is more than beauty—it’s a conversation. It’s about seeing the world through another lens and recognising our shared human experiences. Through my films and photographs and exhibitions, I aim to engage, provoke thought, and inspire change.

Explore my portfolio, delve into the narratives I’ve captured, and perhaps see the world a little differently. Together, we can appreciate the richness of diverse perspectives and stories and create a more inclusive narrative for us all.

Welcome, and thank you for joining me on this journey.
